Prelims - Current events of national and international importance | Government policies and interventions

Why in News?

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently convened an interactive session with Heads and representatives of IIT, IIIT, NIT, and other engineering colleges across Assam at Guwahati.

  • Aim – To engage university student volunteers (Sanchar Mitras) as digital ambassadors to bridge the communication gap between citizens and the telecom ecosystem.
  • Launched by - Department of Telecommunication(D0T), Ministry of communication.
  • 1st outreach program - Assam LSA Partners with 18 Prominent Engineering Colleges across the state of Assam.
  • Objectives - Promoting telecom awareness, 5G, 6G, Artificial Intelligence, digital literacy, digital safety, cyber fraud prevention among public.
  • Eligibility
    • University students passionate about communication and technology, committed to creating awareness in their communities.
    • Open to students from those technical institutes that have active telecom, electronics, computers, cybersecurity or similar programs.
  • Training – Volunteers will get training from National Communications Academy–Technology (NCA-T) and DoT’s Media Wing in the fields, 5G, 6G, AI, cybersecurity, and EMF radiation safety.
  • Outstanding performers may get opportunities to internship, experience R&D & innovation projects, ITU standards & policy work, technical conferences, industry engagement, etc.
  • Community outreach - Sanchar Mitras organise grassroots-level awareness engage with communities and NGOs.
  • Advantages – The Scheme symbolizes India’s leadership in the 4 Ds —
    • Democracy,
    • Demography,
    • Digitization,
    • Delivery.
  • Significance - Engage youth (Yuva Shakti) to create awareness about DoT services, contributing to a more connected and informed society.
  • It will improve public awareness at the grassroot level.
  • It represents a significant step towards India's vision of becoming a telecom research, development, and manufacturing hub.
