Why in News?

Recently, Ministry of Education released the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 for 2025‑26.

  • PGI – It is a data-driven framework devised by the Union Ministry of Education.
  • To evaluate the quality and effectiveness of school education systems across Indian States, Union Territories (UTs), and Districts.

PGI Framework

  • 70 indicators grouped under 6 domains –
    • Learning Outcomes
    • Access
    • Infrastructure & Facilities
    • Equity
    • Governance Processes
    • Teacher Education and Training
  • Purpose – Categorises States/UTs into performance bands; multiple States can fall in same grade.
  • Utility – Identifies gaps, guides policy reforms, promotes evidence‑based governance in education.

Key Highlights

  • Chandigarh – Top Performer (Uttam‑3 grade, 761–820 points).
  • Delhi – Placed in Prachesta‑1 grade (701–760 points).
  • Meghalaya – Score from 448 to 525.7, moved out of lowest grade.
  • Gap Reduction – Performance difference among States reduced from 51% (2017‑18) to 31.4% (2025‑26).
