Why in News?

The Nobel Committee announced recently that 71-year-old Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai has won the 2025 Nobel Prize in literature.

  • László Krasznahorkai is awarded Nobel Prize in Literature for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.
  • Given by - Swedish Academy in Stockholm, Sweden.
  • Award money - The prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy and is worth 11 million crowns ($1.2 million).

About the Laureate

  • Krasznahorkai born in 1954, is a Hungarian novelist and screenwriter known for his philosophical and often apocalyptic works.
  • Satantango, Krasznahorkai's first novel, came out in 1985. It's about a pair of swindlers and a nearly abandoned collective farm.
  • The book was made into a seven-hour movie in 1994. And The Melancholy of Resistance is about a strange, ghostly circus appearing in a small town with a giant, dead stuffed whale.
  • His 'Herscht 07769' has been described as a great contemporary German novel, on account of its accuracy in portraying the country's social unrest.
  • Krasznahorkai is the second Hungarian to win the prize, following Imre Kertész in 2002.

Nobel Prize Literature 2025

Last year's prize was won by South Korean author Han Kang “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life".
