Why in News?

Recently, Union Minister launched the BharatGen AI at the prestigious “BharatGen Summit”, India’s largest Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and LLM summit and hackathon.

  • It is a sovereign AI model initiative to support Indian languages in key governance sectors.
  • It is a government-funded AI, based Multimodal Large Language Model (LLM).

A large language model (LLM) is an AI system trained on vast amounts of text data to understand and generate human-like text, perform tasks like summarization and translation, and answer questions.

  • Launched by – Ministry of Science & Technology.
  • Umbrella program – National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
  • Key features
    • Multilingual and multimodal nature of foundation models,
    • Bhartiya data set based building, and training,
    • Open-source platform and
    • Development of an ecosystem of generative AI research.
  • Languages covered – 9 Indian languages, which include Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Telugu, and Kannada.
    • By June 2026, all 22 scheduled Indian languages will be covered.
  • Applications – It has developed applications in the sectors of agriculture, governance and defence & planned to available across all states and districts.
