Postal Ballots

The Election Commission rejected the Opposition's demand to count the postal ballots before the EVM counting.

EC's announcement – “The penultimate (2^ndlast) round of EVM/VVPATs counting shall not be taken up until the counting of postal ballot papers is completed at the counting centre.”
Legal basis – Rule 54A, Conduct of Elections Rules 1961.
Provided to
- Members of the armed forces, government employees posted outside India, or those deployed on election duty.
- Special voters such as the President, Vice-President, Governors, Union Cabinet ministers, and Speakers.
- New category of “absentee voters” - Employed in essential services including railway employees and media personnel.
- Senior citizens 85+ age, persons with disabilities.

Civil Aviation Minister inaugurates Udan Yatri Cafe at Vijayawada International Airport.

Inaugurated by – Minister of Civil Aviation.
Objecttives – To ensure that no air passenger would travel with an unfilled stomach.
To enhance the passenger experience by offering affordable, and quality food & beverages, including tea priced at Rs.10/-, coffee/snacks/sweets at Rs.20/-.

Performance-Linked Rewards for Coal India Workers

Coal India workers to receive rupees 1.03 lakh as performance-linked rewards.

Performance linked reward system – It involves rewarding employees according to their performance, or results achieved or contribution to organisations performance as individuals or as a part of a group.
Announced after – 6^th meeting of the standardisation committee of the Joint Bipartite Committee for the Coal Industry.

Joint Bipartite Committee

Representation from – Senior management of PSUs and central trade unions.
Aim – To negotiate and decide the wages and other allowances for the workers of the coal industry.

International Trade Negotiations Program for Department of Commerce

Launched by – Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT).
Organised by – IIFT’s Centre for International Negotiations (CIN).
Aim – To strengthen the negotiation skills of government officials and bolster India’s global trade engagement.

e-observer system

Government will soon introduce an onboard electronic observer system for remote monitoring and recording of marine fish catch.

Developed by – Fishery Survey of India (FSI).
Announced after – “Species Identification and Data Collection for Tuna and Allied Species” workshop.
Nodal ministry – Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying.
Aim – To provide accurate scientific data for stock assessment and management by observing fishing operations across various vessel types.
Significance – It builds on the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)

Species Identification and Data Collection for Tuna & Allied Species

It is a 5 days’ workshop.
Organized by – Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) & FSI.
Delegates from – 12 countries, including Japan, France, Thailand, Indonesia, and South Africa, along with representatives from 18 Indian coastal states and Union Territories.
Discussion on – The need to revise the global tuna quota system, which India argues currently favors nations with historically higher catch levels.

Approved in – Australia.
Aim – To slow early Alzheimer's progression by targeting amyloid proteins in the brain.
Concern – High cost and potential side effects, including brain swelling, limit its accessibility and raise safety concerns.
