Operation Crystal Break

Recently, illegal drug factory busted on outskirts of Bhopal.

  • Conducted by – Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
  • Aim – To curb mephedrone and other illegal drugs manufacturing factories.

Mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone)

  • It is a new psychoactive substance, a drug that has been designed to produce effects similar to those of established illicit drugs.
  • Empathogen-Stimulant Drug – It speeds up the messages travelling between the brain and body.
  • Effects – It increases an individual’s feeling of empathy and kindness and it enhances feelings of being socially accepted and connected to others.

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI)

  • It is the apex anti-smuggling agency of India.
  • Nodal ministry – Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs, Ministry of Finance.
  • Objectives – To detect and curb smuggling of contraband, including drug trafficking, illicit trade in wildlife & environmentally sensitive items.
  • To combat commercial frauds related to international trade and evasion of Customs duty.

FIR

  • First Information Report (FIR) – It is the first document filed when a crime is reported under Section 154 CrPC.
  • It records the complainant’s narrative of the alleged offense.
  • It preserves crucial first-hand details that shape evidence collection and prosecution strategy.

Supreme Court’s FIR Quashing Power

  • Constitutional power – Article 136 & 142, Supreme Court uses its inherent jurisdiction to quash an FIR for justice.
  • Article 136 - Allows special leave petitions to correct legal errors.
  • Article 142 - Ensures “complete justice” when lower courts cannot.

High Court’s FIR Quashing power

  • Power under – Section 528 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
  • Section 528 of BNSS – High Courts can dismiss criminal proceedings that are malicious and legally unsustainable.
  • Significance – To prevent abuse of process and to safeguard fundamental rights as enshrined in the Indian constitution.

35cr worth banned Chinese firecrackers were seized across Indian ports.

  • Conducted by – Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
  • Aim – To trace, intercept, and seize banned Chinese firecrackers.

Import of Firecrackers

  • Restricted under – Indian Trade Clarification (ITC) based on the Harmonized System (HS) Classification of the Foreign Trade Policy.
  • Licences from – Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) under the Explosive Rules 2008.
  • Banned chemicals – Red lead, copper oxide, lithium, etc.
