A 102-Year-Old Summits Mount Fuji

Kokichi Akuzawa, a 102-year-old mountaineer, has become the oldest man to summit Mount Fuji, Japan's highest peak.

  • Certified by Guinness World Records - His remarkable ascent on August 5, 2025 to the summit of mount fuji.
  • Features of Mount Fuji - Tallest mountain in Japan, it is an Active stratovolcano type.
  • A Three-Volcano Structure - mountain is composed of three successive volcanoes: Komitake, Ko Fuji ("Old Fuji"), and Shin Fuji ("New Fuji").
  • Exercise Dharma Guardian - A joint Military exercise was hosted between India and Japan.

International Literacy Day 2025

On September 8, the world celebrates International Literacy Day (ILD) to highlight the fundamental importance of literacy for a just and peaceful society.

  • First celebrated -  In 1967, following its declaration by UNESCO in 1966.
  • Theme for 2025 -  To "Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era."
  • Venue - UNESCO HQ , Paris
  • Aims – To addresses how digital tools are changing learning and work, also highlighting the need to bridge the "digital divide."
  • Literacy -  Is essential for human empowerment, allowing individuals to exercise their rights, gain new skills, and foster a more tolerant and equitable society.

Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA)

Recently, IEPFA have taken initiatives to make it easier for investors to reclaim their money by simplifying documentation for low-value claims.

  • Established in - 2016, under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to manage funds and protect investor interests.
  • New Initiative Aims -  To reduce documentation and timelines, making it easier for people to claim their funds.
  • High-Powered Committee – Formed With representatives from Ministry of Corporate Affairs and SEBI.
  • Specific Claim Limits - The new rules would apply to claims for physical securities valued up to Rs 5 lakh, demat securities up to Rs 15 lakh, and dividends up to Rs 10,000.

Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) Rules Notified

Recently, Government of India has officially notified the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) rules under the National Pension System (NPS), a key step-in public-sector pension reforms.

  • UPS was - First approved in August 2024 and became operational on April 1, 2025.
  • Guidelines issued by - Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA)  on March 19, 2025.
  • Features - The rules cover a wide range of topics, including enrolment options, contribution structures, and compensation for delays.
  • Retirement Flexibility - Employees can now retire after 20 years of service, a reduction from the previous 25-year requirement.

National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC)

Bhupender Gupta has been named the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited, a leading hydropower company in India.

  • Appointed by -  Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
  • NHPC - Established in 1975,  started with the Baira Suil Power Station in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Nodal agency -  Ministry of Power
  • Company Status  - Navratna
  • Type  - Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE)
  • Role of NHPC -  Is crucial to India’s energy infrastructure.
  • Expansion- Historically focused on hydropower, it is now actively diversifying into other green energy sources.
  • This includes establishing solar parks in various states and initiating pilot projects for both wind and tidal energy.
