Why in News?

Recently, Union Ministry of Education released National Institutional Ranking Framework, 2025.

  • The framework outlines a methodology to rank Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) across the country.
  • Launched by - Ministry of Education in 2015.
  • Objectives – To provide transparency, accountability in rankings and promote excellence in higher education institutions.
  • To encourage institutions to compete and improve the quality of education by driving improvements in teaching, learning, and research.
  • To Help students to make informed choices regarding higher education institutions.

    • Research and Professional Practices
    • Graduation Outcomes
    • Outreach and Inclusivity
    • Perception.
  • Key highlights, 2025
  • Categories - A new category is added this year for sustainable development goals, bringing the total number of categories to seventeen.
  • This evaluates institutions on the basis of their ‘green’ practices.

NIRF-1

  • Overall Category - The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras secured the top position for the seventh consecutive year.
  • Universities - Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru retained the top spot in this category for the tenth year running.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held its position at second place.
  • Colleges - Hindu College, Delhi University, was ranked as the best college for the second consecutive year.
  • College category – All the top five colleges in India belong Delhi University (DU) while 10 of the top 20 colleges are its constituents, reflecting the university’s strength in undergraduate education.
  • Engineering - IIT Madras continued to lead in this category as well.
  • Management - Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad remained at the top of the management institutions for the sixth year in a row.
  • Medical - All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi secured the first position among medical colleges, a position it has held for over a decade.
  • Law - The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru retained its 1st position for the eighth consecutive year.
  • SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) - IIT Madras also topped this newly introduced category.
