Why in News?
Recently,
PMKSY – It is a central sector umbrella scheme.
It aimed at creating modern infrastructure with efficient supply chain management from the farm to the retail outlet.
The SAMPADA scheme was renamed as PMKSY.
Launched in – 2017.
Nodal Ministry –Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI).
Objective –
Promote growth of the food processing sector.
Provide better returns to farmers.
Reduce wastage of agricultural produce.
Create employment opportunities, especially in rural areas.
Increase processing levels and enhance exports of processed foods
Features –
Demand Driven – Not state, district, or crop-specific but demand-driven in nature.
Financial Support – Grants-in-aid/subsidy for establishing food processing projects.
Investment – Encourages on-farm and off-farm preservation and processing.
Capacity Building – Under the PMFME scheme, webinars, hands-on training, and incubation centres are introduced to farmers and other stakeholders.
Research – Supports R&D through ICAR and the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management(NIFTEM) institutions.
