Why in news?

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced that Mohanlal, a Malayalam actor, conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023, will be presented at the 71^st National Film Awards ceremony.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the Indian cinema’s highest honor.
The award is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Indian Government's Directorate of Film Festivals.
Purpose - It is awarded for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.
Instituted in –1969, by the Government of India to commemorate Dadasaheb Phalke's contribution to Indian cinema.
Announced by - Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Citation - It consists of a ‘Swarna Kamal’ (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh, a certificate, a silk roll, and a shawl.
Presented by - The President of India in the presence of Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting and others.
First recipient - Devika Rani Roerich in 1969.
Previous winners - Mithun Chakraborty (2024), Waheeda Rehman (2023), and Asha Parekh (2022).

Dhundiraj Govind Phalke

Dhundiraj Govind Phalke (1870–1944), also known as Dadasaheb Phalke, is a pioneering filmmaker in India.
He is often regarded as "the father of Indian cinema".
He was born in 1870 at Trimbak in Maharashtra.
Before venturing into films, Phalke worked as a photographer, and had even worked with the famed painter ‘Raja Ravi Varma’.
In 1913, Phalke wrote, produced, and directed India’s first feature film, the silent ‘Raja Harishchandra’.
Phalke’s fortunes dwindled with the arrival of sound in cinema, and he died in 1944 at Nashik after retiring from films.
