Why in News?

The Ministry of Culture is organising Parakram Diwas–2026 to commemorate Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's birth anniversary.

Parakram Diwas–2026

  • Aim – To commemorate Netaji’s birth anniversary.
  • Honors his contribution to India’s freedom struggle and his ideals of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism.
  • Organized by Ministry of Culture.
  • 1st Edition held in 2021, at Victoria Memorial, Kolkata.
  • Highlights, 2026
    • Marks the 129th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
    • Venue – Sri Vijaya Puram, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. And celebrations at 13 other iconic locations linked to Netaji’s legacy.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

  • Born – January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Odisha.
  • Parents – Janakinath Bose (father) and Prabhavati Devi (mother).
  • Early Activism – Earned a degree from the University of Calcutta and later going to England to prepare for the Indian Civil Services (ICS).
  • His passion for India's freedom led him to abandon his ICS aspirations and join the Indian National Congress (INC).
  • Ideology His political career was profoundly shaped by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and the mentorship of Chittaranjan Das.
  • Freedom Struggle – INC Leadership – Emerged as a left-wing leader in the Indian National Congress.
  • Served as President of the All-India Youth Congress and Secretary of the Bengal State Congress.
  • Poorna Swaraj Stand – Strongly advocated complete independence over Dominion Status.
  • Congress Presidency – Elected INC President in 1938 and 1939; resigned due to ideological differences with Mahatma Gandhi on methods of struggle.
  • Forward Bloc – Formed the Forward Bloc in 1939 to unite radical nationalist forces.
  • Armed Struggle & INA – He leverage the support of Axis powers during World War II and ordered for house arrest.
  • Escaped house arrest in 1941; formed the Free India Legion in Germany and took over leadership of the Indian National Army in 1943.
  • Azad Hind Government – Established the Provisional Government of Free India in 1943 and popularized slogans like “Jai Hind” and “Delhi Chalo.”

Ross Island in Cuttack, Odisha, was renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep (2018) on January 23, 1897.
